MODEL ROCKETRY WORKSHOP

Single Stage Model Rocket Workshop

Workshop Summary:

Model Rocketry is one of the fastest growing challenging educational-scientific activity and
also an aero-sport. This has proven to be a powerful tool for students in understanding basic
principles, developing of experimental skills and encouraging creativity and innovation in non-
formal way. Experience of sense of accomplishment that develops as the student progresses
from an assemblage of parts and ideas to a successfully flying model rocket gives him an
unusual feeling of an achievement.

Model rockets are small size (25 cm to meter size) working models made out of non metallic
light weight materials such as card paper, balsa, plastic, fire cracker rockets , glue, etc.. They
have the essential parts of a rocket such as body tube, thrust providing engine, air drag
reducing nose cone, stabilizer fins, initial guide providing launch lug etc.. They are designed
for stable flights and launched in open ground using a launcher such as rod launcher or so.
They are ignited using incense sticks or other safe system. The height achieved by a stable
model rocket can be 50-200 meters depending on the its weight, engine used and other design
parameters such as nose cone shape, size of fins etc..

Clubs can be formed to run this activity. The participants design their own rockets, make and
launch them. They can also measure the heights achieved by their rockets. They can go for
advanced designs such as multistage rockets, rocket with parachute etc.. They can organize
competitions. With fun the participants learn science behind rocketry, various principles of
Science and Maths. They also develop scientific attitude in themselves.

We are trying to provide a platform to students for Model Rocket Competition and encourage
them for participating in an international competition. We are also engaged in organizing
workshops at various places such as schools, institutes and organization in Gujarat, Such
workshops and seminars not only excites students but also enhances knowledge of teachers
and parents creating awareness and need of space science. We have also conducted
workshops in various parts of India.

During this workshop we propose to train the participants in making single stage model
rockets. They will test and launch them and learn the basic principles involved. The
methodology adopted is nontraditional but scientific.

Objectives:

1.To provide an opportunity to fabricate and launch one’s own rocket,
2.To develop scientific temperament in students.
3.To make it easy to understand scientific principles through this activity.
4.To develop team work culture.

Approach & methodology to be used:

First the students will learn how to fabricate the rockets then they

will make their own rocket. After fabrication they will test them and

finally will launch them. Efforts will be taken to fulfill the objectives.

Methodology is non-formal, the students will learn while they play.

Resource persons will act as catalysts helping those learning

principles themselves.

Program Schedule
General Discussion & Introduction about Rocketry
What is Model Rocket & Function of Model Rocket.
Demonstration and concepts of Single stage Model Rocket
Making of Single stage Model Rocket by Students
Stability Theory & Flight Chart

Launching of rockets

Target groups: engineering students and anyone who is willing to learn even the school guys
also

No of Participants: 200 Students to 210 students

Workshop Charges: Rs. 500/- Per Participant (Non–Refundable)

Duration of the Workshop: 01 Days

Workshop Timing: (10.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.)

Activity material consumed during the training workshop:

All the necessary materials for making a Model Rocket. Like, Different

papers for making various parts (of Rocket,

types of Card

Rocket Engine,
Rod for body tube,
Rod for Launch lug,
Fevicol,
Rocket Launcher, Etc.,).THIS MATERIALS AND ALONG

WITH THE LECTURE DEMONSTRATION ARE COMPRISING AND
COMING UNDER THE CHARGE OF RS 500/-

Rocket engine:

Engine is arranged at the lower or rare end of body tube. When
engine is ignited, lots of gases are emitted with high pressures
from the nozzle. As per the third law of motion same type of
force acts the other side. That’s why rocket is lifted.

Generally we will be using a solid propellant for that which
will be consisting of
1. Carbon (C) ,
2. Potassium Nitrate (KNO3), and
3. Sulphur (S).
And with the help of this propellant which is most probably
called the rocket engine will be helping the rocket to fly in the
air just like a rocket propellant of advanced rockets which
helps the rockets to go into the space.

Participants will bring from home: Scissor, compass box, note book, scale

Bio-data and work experience of the MENTOR involved in the project:
